After another season that failed to meet expectations, Kaizer Chiefs are gearing up for more hard work ahead. The club finished outside the top eight once again, missing out on next season’s MTN8 tournament for the second year running.
Struggles Continue Despite Nedbank Cup Win
While Chiefs finally ended their decade-long trophy drought by lifting the Nedbank Cup this season, their league form was far from impressive. Consistency was a major issue throughout the campaign. Coach Nasreddine Nabi didn’t hold back, openly criticizing the squad’s lack of quality from start to finish.
Following their final match—a goalless draw with Polokwane City—Nabi spoke candidly about the team’s shortcomings.
Nabi: Chiefs Create Chances But Lack a Clinical Striker
The Tunisian coach highlighted that Chiefs are among the league’s best at creating scoring opportunities but stressed that without a reliable striker, they couldn’t climb higher on the table. The one forward signed in January, Tashreeq Morris, was substituted before halftime in that last game, signaling he wasn’t the long-term answer.
Nabi was upfront, saying Morris was brought in to challenge whoever the club would bring in as a top striker.
Fiston Mayele: The Striker Nabi Wants
It’s no secret who Nabi has his eyes on: his former player at Yanga SC, Fiston Mayele. The Congolese international recently confirmed he’s been in contact with Chiefs about a potential move.
“Yes, it’s true. Coach Nabi reached out to me in December,” Mayele told KickOff.com ahead of Pyramids FC’s CAF Champions League semi-final first leg against Mamelodi Sundowns. “But now isn’t the right time to discuss transfers. My focus is on the final and finishing the season strongly.”
