Polokwane City head coach Phuti Mohafe has addressed growing speculation around the potential departures of some of the club’s most influential players, including Oswin Appollis and Thabang Matuludi, both of whom have attracted strong interest from top DStv Premiership sides.
The Limpopo-based outfit impressed in the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season, finishing above expectations and earning plaudits for their aggressive, team-oriented style of play. Central to that success were standout performers like Appollis, the creative spark in midfield, and Matuludi, the dependable and dynamic defender.
However, with success comes attention — and Mohafe is well aware of the storm brewing around his star talents.
Speaking to local media following Polokwane City’s final league match, Mohafe admitted that there had been approaches and interest, but remained firm in his message: “We are not a selling club unless the right offer benefits both the player and the team.”
Appollis and Matuludi: In-Demand Talent
Oswin Appollis, whose flair, vision, and attacking intent earned him a Bafana Bafana call-up earlier this season, is reportedly being monitored by Orlando Pirates and Cape Town City. Meanwhile, Matuludi’s consistent performances at left-back have put him on the radar of SuperSport United and Kaizer Chiefs, both of whom are looking to bolster their defensive depth.
Mohafe praised their professionalism but issued a stern warning to suitors: “These boys are under contract. If a club wants them, it has to be done properly. We won’t be bullied into letting go of our key players just because of big names.”
The Bigger Picture for Polokwane City
While speculation intensifies, Mohafe remains focused on building continuity and pushing for a top-eight finish next season. He acknowledged that Polokwane City cannot completely prevent players from dreaming bigger but emphasized the need for a clear pathway and proper negotiations.
“As a coach, I want what’s best for the players, but I also want what’s right for this club. We’re building something special here. If they do leave, it must be because they’re truly ready — and we must be compensated in a way that helps us grow,” he said.
Final Word
With the transfer window approaching and scouts circling, Polokwane City find themselves in a delicate position — balancing ambition with the challenge of retaining their core players.
For now, Mohafe is standing his ground, signalling to rivals that while Polokwane City may not be among the traditional giants, they won’t be easy prey in the transfer market.
