With the new season on the horizon, Orlando Pirates are still weighing up who will lead the team from the dugout — and it may just be another Spaniard.
It’s been a month since Pirates officially confirmed the departure of Jose Riveiro, the coach who left a lasting legacy after guiding the club to three MTN8 titles and two Nedbank Cup triumphs. Despite his success, the Buccaneers have yet to reveal who will take the reins next.
Now, a familiar name is being linked with the hot seat.
According to Soccer Laduma, Orlando Pirates are in talks with Pablo Franco Martin — a name South African fans may remember from his brief time at AmaZulu. Martin is currently available after parting ways with Saudi side Al-Faisaly, where he reportedly turned down a contract renewal despite being offered a salary increase.
“There have been talks between Pablo Franco Martin and Orlando Pirates. An offer has been made, but he’s not the only option on the table — the club is still considering other candidates,” a source told Soccer Laduma.
The insider also confirmed that Martin is genuinely interested in taking the job, adding fuel to speculation that the Sea Robbers may once again be led by Spanish influence.
While Pirates work behind the scenes to secure their next head coach, Jose Riveiro is reportedly in ongoing discussions with Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly, who are keen to bring him on board.
With time ticking toward the start of the 2025/26 season, all eyes will be on Orlando Pirates as fans await the big announcement.
