Some Mamelodi Sundowns fans were left frustrated after Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Pyramids FC in the CAF Champions League final. Many believe the presence of veteran playmaker Themba Zwane could have made a big difference in unlocking the Egyptian side’s defence.
Why Zwane Was Left Out – Cardoso Responds
Sundowns were left disappointed after conceding a late equaliser in stoppage time, which cancelled out Lucas Ribeiro’s earlier goal. Supporters were quick to point out that Zwane’s experience and creativity might have helped secure a win.
However, head coach Miguel Cardoso defended his decision, saying Zwane, like all other players, was managed carefully and that the choices made were for the team’s overall balance.
“Everyone wanted to play in this match, no doubt,” Cardoso explained during the post-match press conference. “But we made the decisions we felt were best for the team.”
The Portuguese coach also acknowledged how football can be both rewarding and cruel. “One moment, one second, especially in the dying moments of a game, can change how people see our choices,” he said.
Sundowns now head to Cairo for the decisive second leg on Sunday at 19:00. They’ll need a win or a scoreless draw to claim their second Champions League title since 2016, while any scoring draw will see Pyramids crowned champions.
