In a season packed with standout performances and rising stars, former Mamelodi Sundowns skipper Hlompho Kekana has turned heads with his unexpected choice for Orlando Pirates’ top performer — veteran midfielder Makhehleni Makhaula.
Speaking on Soccer Zone via SABC Sport, Kekana didn’t hesitate to back Makhaula as his Player of the Season, praising the 36-year-old for his consistency and unseen contributions.
“For me, it has to be Makhaula,” said Kekana. “He gave Pirates the balance they needed. People often overlook the dirty work, but without him, that team doesn’t function.”
Kekana went on to explain that while flair players like Relebohile Mofokeng grabbed headlines, it was Makhaula’s relentless work in the middle that made those moments possible.
“There’s no Rele without Makhaula,” he added. “He was the engine — the one doing the unseen work, giving others the freedom to shine.”
It’s a nod of respect from one midfield general to another — and a reminder that not all heroes wear the armband or make the highlight reels.
