Orlando Pirates must make five key signings in the upcoming season if they are serious about winning the league.

Earlier this season, it seemed like the Buccaneers were on track to secure their first Betway Premiership title in 13 years. However, inconsistency and a lack of impactful signings caused their title hopes to fade. Under former coach Jose Riveiro, Pirates started strong, winning their first seven league games. But after suffering three defeats in their next seven matches, their charge towards the title slowly evaporated.

With Riveiro now gone, the team could face more challenges in the coming season. Several players are set to leave the club, which means club chairman Irvin Khoza will likely have to open his wallet to strengthen the squad.

Who can help Pirates claim the title next season?

Fiston Mayele
The Congolese striker has been on fire, and his brace against Pirates in the CAF Champions League semi-final was a major factor in Riveiro’s departure. Mayele could be the clinical striker Pirates need to solve their goal-scoring issues.

Fawaaz Basadien
At 28, the talented left-back from Stellenbosch FC could be the ideal replacement for Innocent Maela, who is expected to leave after eight years with the club. Basadien offers both defensive solidity and attacking threat, making him a great fit alongside players like Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Nkosinathi Sibisi.

Oswin Appolis
With Relebohile Mofokeng likely to leave the PSL, Appolis could be the perfect replacement. Although linked with rivals Kaizer Chiefs, Pirates should look to hijack the move and secure the 23-year-old winger’s services.

Feisal Salum
Bringing in Salum would be a game-changer for Pirates. The Tanzanian playmaker would thrive alongside the likes of Tito Maswanganyi and Kabelo Dlamini, helping the club strengthen their midfield and increase their chances of winning the league.

Sphephelo Sithole
The highly-rated young midfielder has been linked with a move to Chiefs, but Pirates could tempt him to join their squad. His signing would further solidify the midfield for a team aiming for success in both domestic and continental competitions.

With these five key signings, Orlando Pirates could be on their way to ending their 13-year league title drought. Can they bounce back after Riveiro’s departure? Time will tell.
