If there’s one position where the Springboks need to reinforce depth, it’s at hooker. The need was clear at the 2023 Rugby World Cup when an injury to Malcolm Marx forced the team to rely on veteran utility forward Deon Fourie as backup to Bongi Mbonambi — even though Fourie isn’t a specialist in that role.

Enter Marnus van der Merwe: The Dark Horse in the Hooker Race?

One name that could come into the conversation is Marnus van der Merwe, the dynamic hooker who has impressed since his move from the Cheetahs to Welsh club Scarlets. His performances in Europe have not gone unnoticed.

Originally from Nelspruit, the 28-year-old was invited to the Springboks’ wider alignment camp in early 2023 — a clear sign he’s on the national radar. And for van der Merwe, wearing the green and gold remains a dream he’s working hard to realise.

“As a kid, every South African who watches rugby dreams of playing for the Springboks,” he said. “It’s just like people in Wales who grow up wanting to represent their team — we all want to play for our country.”

For now, his focus remains firmly on giving his all for Scarlets.

“That’s where I’m putting my energy — helping the Scarlets perform. But through that, I hope the Springbok coaches notice what I can bring to the table.”

“The goal is definitely to play international rugby. I give my best every day and hope that’s enough to earn a shot.”

With the Boks clearly in need of more specialist hookers, van der Merwe’s form and hunger could put him in contention sooner than expected.
