Newly-signed SuperSport United defender Inacio Miguel has made headlines with his bold praise of South African football, claiming that the Premier Soccer League (PSL) is at a higher level than some of the European leagues he’s played in.

The 30-year-old Angolan international, who joined the Pretoria-based side ahead of the 2024/25 season, brings with him experience from European clubs in Portugal and Lithuania. But according to Miguel, the intensity, quality, and professionalism of South African football have left a lasting impression on him — one he didn’t fully expect.

“PSL Is More Competitive”

In a recent interview with local media, Miguel didn’t hold back in his assessment.

“I’ve played in Europe, but I have to say the PSL is more competitive in many ways. The tempo is higher, and the players are physically stronger and technically gifted,” said Miguel.
“People think European leagues are automatically better, but in South Africa, the football is at a very high level — maybe even better than where I’ve been before.”

A Seasoned Defender Adjusts Quickly

Miguel, who previously played for clubs like FK Panevėžys in Lithuania and various sides in Portugal’s second tier, believes his experience has helped him adjust quickly to the demands of the DStv Premiership.

He added that the fan culture and professionalism of the league also stood out.

“The stadiums, the fans, the structure — it’s impressive. There’s real passion here, and it’s easy to see why the league keeps growing. The players here could easily compete in Europe.”

Big Expectations at SuperSport

SuperSport United, managed by Gavin Hunt, are hoping Miguel’s experience and leadership will bolster their defensive line as they push for silverware this season. Miguel has already earned praise from Hunt, who described him as “a smart, disciplined defender who brings calm and stability.”

A Message to Angolan Talent

Miguel also used the opportunity to encourage more Angolan players to consider the PSL as a viable career step.

“To young Angolan players — don’t overlook South Africa. This league is serious, professional, and will challenge you to grow. It’s not a step down — it’s a step forward.”
