Mamelodi Sundowns cruised to a 3-0 victory over Stellenbosch FC on Sunday, but once again, they had to do it without their star goalkeeper, Ronwen Williams, who has now missed three consecutive matches.
Coach Miguel Cardoso, however, downplayed any concerns around Williams’ absence. “There’s no issue, only solutions,” Cardoso said after the match. “Ronwen is not a serious concern. We expect him to be available very soon—possibly even in our next fixture.”
The Sundowns boss also noted that any concerns involving veteran goalkeeper Denis Onyango were minor, emphasizing that the club remains in control of the situation.
While the team appears stable on the field, off-field issues involving former midfielder Sipho Mbule are casting a shadow. The 27-year-old, currently on loan at Sekhukhune United, is reportedly being released early due to another incident of misconduct—adding to his troubled record.
Mbule, once tipped for greatness, has struggled to stay disciplined throughout his career. Back in 2022, he was punished for arriving at training under the influence of alcohol. Despite brief flashes of form—scoring two goals and registering three assists in 18 appearances—his off-field behaviour continues to raise red flags.
Former footballer and analyst Junior Khanye didn’t hold back in his response. “It hurts to see this,” he told Kick Off. “Sipho is extremely gifted, but football isn’t just about talent anymore. His attitude is costing him everything.”
Khanye, who faced similar setbacks during his own playing career, warned that clubs don’t easily forget. “Reputation spreads. Directors and coaches talk. No club wants to gamble on a player with a history of discipline issues.”
He added that without a dramatic turnaround, Mbule could face months without a team. “It might take a miracle for him to revive his career now. He’s following a dangerous path many of us know too well.”
