After missing out on the Nedbank Cup, Orlando Pirates head into their final two matches with nothing but pride at stake. It’s a disappointing end to a season that promised more, especially after a strong start under coach José Riveiro.

Riveiro has enjoyed success since taking charge, securing five trophies in just three seasons. But the second half of the current campaign has fallen short of expectations. While the Buccaneers lifted the MTN8 trophy in October, they failed to deliver in both the CAF Champions League and the DStv Premiership.

With Riveiro set to leave the club, Pirates now face a crucial reset. There’s been no official word on who will take over, though speculation continues to grow. One name that’s been linked is Fadlu Davids, currently managing Simba SC. However, his agent Rasthoem Simons has dismissed those rumours, confirming there’s been no contact with the club.

The uncertainty doesn’t stop with the coaching position. Changes are expected within the squad as well. Defender Innocent Maela and forward Zakhele Lepasa could be on their way out, while Tshegofatso Mabasa is attracting interest from Middle Eastern clubs and is likely to move on. Rising star Relebohile Mofokeng, 20, also looks set for a European move after ongoing interest from overseas.

On the recruitment front, Pirates have been quiet. One area that needs urgent attention is the left-back position, and Stellenbosch FC’s Fawaaz Basadien has been identified as a potential solution.

As the season winds down, the big question remains: Who will step in to guide the Sea Robbers into a new era?
