Orlando Piratesβ soon-to-depart coach, Jose Riveiro, has earned legendary status at the club, securing five trophies over three seasons. But what sets him apart from other coaches?
Unmatched Success in a Short Time
Since arriving in Soweto in July 2022, the Spanish coach has turned the club into a powerhouse. In his very first season, Riveiro guided the team to the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup titles. He followed that up with two more MTN8 victories and a second Nedbank Cup trophy in the subsequent seasons.
As his time with Pirates nears its end in June, assistant coach Mandla Ncikazi spoke about Riveiroβs unique approach to coaching, revealing that his influence goes beyond just tactics.
A Unique and Professional Approach
According to Ncikazi, Riveiro’s professionalism and demeanor set him apart from others in the game. “Coach Riveiro is more than just a coach; he’s a unique individual,” Ncikazi told FARPost. “He takes his job seriously but remains calm, never too happy or too disappointed, which helps manage the pressure that comes with high expectations.”
His steady approach has had a significant impact on the players, especially the younger ones. “Whether we win or lose, his approach remains the same. That consistency helps the young players perform without fear,” Ncikazi added.
Self-Reliance and Preparation
Riveiro is also known for his thorough preparation. Unlike many modern coaches who rely heavily on analysts, Riveiro prefers to analyze the games himself. βHe doesn’t depend on others for his analysis, which is rare. This allows him to create his own game plan, and thatβs part of what makes him stand out,β Ncikazi concluded.
In a short time, Riveiro has turned Orlando Pirates into a force to be reckoned with, and his influence at the club will not be easily forgotten.
