Former Orlando Pirates defender Lizo Mjempu is backing his old club to once again get the better of Kaizer Chiefs when the two Soweto rivals clash in the Nedbank Cup final this Saturday at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
The Buccaneers head into the showdown fresh off a 2-1 league win over Chiefs last weekend, and Mjempu is confident they’ll repeat the feat to claim a third consecutive Nedbank Cup title.
“There’s no doubt in my mind—Pirates will win this final,” Mjempu told Soccer Laduma. “They’ve got the momentum, the confidence, and the belief. Chiefs just don’t look like a team that believes in itself.”
Chiefs’ Confidence Questioned
Mjempu, who was part of Pirates’ treble-winning squad in the 2011/12 season, believes the big difference between the two sides is psychological. According to him, Chiefs’ long trophy drought continues to weigh them down, while Pirates are riding high after strong domestic and continental performances.
“Chiefs players look uncertain and low on confidence. Meanwhile, Pirates are buzzing. You can see it in how they approach games—they’re playing without fear,” he said.
Praise for Mofokeng and Nkota
The former left-back reserved special praise for two of Pirates’ young stars, Relebohile Mofokeng and Mohau Nkota, who have been standout performers for the club this season.
“Rele and Nkota aren’t just talented—they play for the badge. Even in tough CAF Champions League matches, they showed leadership beyond their years. Rele makes the right decisions, and he’s always playing with intent. Nkota brings that same energy and intelligence to the game,” Mjempu added.
He believes that combination of youthful hunger and overall squad depth will prove too much for Chiefs on Saturday.
Buccaneers Chasing More Silverware
Having already beaten Chiefs twice this season, the odds appear to be in Pirates’ favor. And with the likes of Mofokeng, Nkota, and Tshegofatso Mabasa in top form, the Soweto giants look poised to end the campaign with another trophy.
