Orlando Pirates kept their Betway Premiership title hopes alive on Tuesday night after grinding out a 2-1 win over Lamontville Golden Arrows at the Moses Mabhida Stadium—despite resting key players ahead of this weekend’s high-stakes Nedbank Cup final against Kaizer Chiefs.

With the victory, the Buccaneers closed the gap on league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns to nine points, keeping some pressure on the defending champions with just a few games to go.

Maswanganyi and Mabasa Deliver for Bucs

In-form Bafana Bafana midfielder Patrick Maswanganyi opened the scoring early in the second half after a slick pass from Kabelo Dlamini set him free. Maswanganyi showed composure to beat goalkeeper Edward Maova and slot home the opener.

Golden Arrows responded quickly, with Siyanda Mthanti equalising just eight minutes later. But second-half substitute Tshegofatso Mabasa proved to be the difference-maker once again, scoring the winner to continue his brilliant run of form off the bench.

Pirates Juggle Squad Ahead of Soweto Derby Final

Head coach Jose Riveiro made several changes to his regular starting XI, clearly keeping one eye on Saturday’s Nedbank Cup showdown with arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs. Stand-in keeper Melusi Buthelezi made a solid impression, keeping the Arrows at bay in the opening stages with key saves.

Despite the rotation, Pirates were dominant in possession and created more clear chances throughout the match. Defenders like Deano van Rooyen and midfielders like Kabelo Dlamini stood out, keeping the Arrows from gaining momentum.

Eyes Still on the Prize

While Sundowns remain in the driver’s seat, Pirates have done their part to keep the pressure on. With silverware still on the line in the cup and a chance to finish strong in the league, Riveiro’s side is showing grit and ambition when it matters most.
