Kaizer Chiefs defenders Inácio Miguel and attacker Gaston Sirino have pinpointed a major issue that’s been holding the team back this season—losing control when they’re ahead.

Despite taking the lead in several key matches, including recent defeats to Marumo Gallants and rivals Orlando Pirates, the Glamour Boys have failed to close games out. According to both veterans, it’s more than just bad luck—it’s a lack of focus and consistency.

“We Switch Off at Crucial Moments” – Miguel

Miguel, who has become a regular in the Chiefs defence, reflected on the team’s tendency to ease off when they’re in front.

“Sometimes you’re leading and have the chance to finish the game, but we don’t take it,” he said. “In big matches like the derby, you can’t afford to relax even for a minute. We need to be serious and keep our focus—because it’s those small details that cost us.”

Sirino: “We Play Well, Then Let It Slip”

At 34, Sirino brings years of experience—and he’s frustrated by how often Chiefs play attractive football only to come away with nothing.

“Too many times this season we’ve played good football but still lost,” Sirino admitted. “It’s all about consistency. We score first and then get comfortable. That has to change. We need to push harder and manage games better.”

All Eyes on the Nedbank Cup Final

With the Nedbank Cup final looming, Chiefs will need to dig deep to avoid another heartbreak. Historically, they’ve dominated the competition with six wins from eight final meetings with Pirates—an encouraging stat, but one that means little without a complete performance.

If Miguel and Sirino’s words are anything to go by, the squad knows what needs fixing. The real question is—can they fix it in time?
