As Orlando Pirates charge toward the finish line of the 2024/2025 season, coach Jose Riveiro is full of praise for his squad’s unwavering determination. The Spanish tactician has described his team as a “pack of animals,” highlighting their relentless fight across all competitions.

With 49 points from 22 matches, the Buccaneers are within striking distance of the Betway Premiership title, trailing Mamelodi Sundowns by 12 points. However, Sundowns have played two more games, making it an uphill battle for Pirates.

Chasing the Premiership Title

While the odds are slim, Riveiro remains optimistic about his side’s chances, insisting that Pirates will continue to chase Sundowns “until the very last day.” The team’s fighting spirit, even after their heartbreaking exit from the CAF Champions League semi-finals to Pyramids FC, shows that they are far from ready to give up.

Pirates are still very much in the race for the Nedbank Cup, where they’re set to face off with Kaizer Chiefs in a highly anticipated final at Moses Mabhida Stadium this Saturday.

Riveiro’s First Trophy of the Season

Earlier in the season, Pirates claimed the MTN8 for a record third consecutive time, cementing their place as one of the top teams in South African football. With the Nedbank Cup final and a potential league title still on the table, Riveiro is focused on finishing the season strong, despite knowing he will likely leave at the end of the campaign.

“These players are showing everyone how badly they want to make this season special,” said Riveiro. “We might not win everything because football is unpredictable, but our commitment, concentration, and desire to win will carry us forward.”

Five Trophies in Two Seasons

Since taking over in June 2022, Riveiro has helped guide Pirates to five domestic cup titles, restoring the club’s trophy-winning reputation and setting high expectations for the future. He is now focused on ensuring his successor inherits a team in peak condition for even greater success.

“Throughout this season, the players have shown what they’re capable of,” Riveiro added. “In May, they’re still performing like beasts—competing in every competition without complaints. We’ve already reached one final, and we’re in another. We were just 10 minutes away from a Champions League final—what more can you ask from these players?”

What’s Next for Pirates?

With both domestic silverware and league points still up for grabs, Pirates remain driven as they push into the final stretch of the season. Whether they walk away with one or two more trophies, their hunger and determination will leave a lasting legacy as they prepare for next season.
