Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Frank Makua has voiced his frustration with the performances of goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma. The 29-year-old keeper has come under heavy criticism for conceding “soft goals” in recent matches, including one that led to a defeat against Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby.
In the 2-1 loss to the Buccaneers, Bvuma was blamed for Relebohile Mofokeng’s winning goal, with many fans questioning his ability to perform under pressure. Makua also believes Bvuma was at fault for both Pirates goals during the derby, suggesting that the goalkeeper’s concentration is lacking.
“We lost focus. Even for the second goal, Bvuma should have done better,” said Makua. “Mofokeng scored with his weaker foot, and the shot lacked power. Bvuma is leaking goals.”
Makua, who believes Bvuma is not living up to expectations, is concerned about the goalkeeperβs lack of improvement as he nears 30. “At this stage, it’s clear he hasn’t reached the level we expect. I don’t know if the training he’s getting isn’t effective or if he’s simply not putting in the effort. Sometimes, being at a club for too long can lead to complacency,” Makua added.
Makua further questioned how Bvuma continues to make basic mistakes despite being an experienced goalkeeper. He pointed out that, “How many derbies has he played before Saturday’s match? These mistakes show there are issues with his concentration, especially when the defense isn’t providing enough cover.”
Makuaβs main concern, however, lies with the quality of Bvuma’s training, stating that a playerβs performance on matchday is a reflection of their preparation in training. Bvuma is expected to start in goal again when Kaizer Chiefs take on Orlando Pirates in the Nedbank Cup final on Saturday at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
