Orlando Pirates’ R11 million investment in Angolan winger Gilberto has not yielded the expected returns, leaving the club with a dilemma. After struggling to secure a regular spot in the team, Pirates loaned the 24-year-old back to his previous club, Petro de Luanda, at the start of the year. Despite his high price and big reputation, Gilberto only managed 11 appearances for the Sea Robbers, without scoring or providing any assists.

Reports have raised concerns about his fitness and lifestyle choices, with a video circulating that shows him in a compromising position—shirtless and holding a bottle of tequila while surrounded by other alcoholic beverages and two females. This behavior has cast a shadow on his professional image.

With Gilberto’s future uncertain, the club must consider potential replacements for the winger.

Elias Mokwana: Recently moved to Esperance in Tunisia, but due to payment issues, Mokwana could be tempted to return to South Africa for the right offer. Pirates could be an attractive option for the former Sekhukhune player.

Oswin Appollis: The 23-year-old Polokwane City winger, known for his balance and ability to operate on both flanks, is another potential signing. Should Pirates sell Gilberto or Monnapule Saleng for a good fee, Appollis could be a viable option.

Devin Titus: Stellenbosch’s 24-year-old winger, who has had an impressive season with seven goals and four assists in 25 appearances, could be a perfect replacement for Gilberto. Titus prefers the right wing and could offer a similar style of play to what Pirates need.
