Since signing for Mamelodi Sundowns in March 2025, many fans have been wondering why new striker Lebo Mothiba hasn’t made a single matchday squad. Now, head coach Miguel Cardoso has shed light on the situation—and it has everything to do with the player’s long-term fitness.
Patience the Key with Mothiba’s Recovery
Following Sundowns’ 2-0 win over Cape Town City, Cardoso explained that Mothiba is still working his way back to full fitness after a lengthy injury layoff.
“He’s a top-quality player, but he’s been out of competitive action for a very long time,” said Cardoso. “He suffered a serious injury and has been going through a tough rehabilitation process.”
While both the club and the player are eager to see him on the pitch, Cardoso emphasized the importance of a careful approach.
“We have to be patient with him, and he understands that too. There’s anxiety on both sides, but we know what’s required. He’s a player we have to handle with care—like crystal,” he added.
Positive Signs, but Still a Waiting Game
Despite the cautious tone, Cardoso did offer a glimmer of hope. Mothiba recently played 15 minutes in a friendly training match with the Diski Challenge team—an important milestone in his road to recovery.
“He looked good, played without restriction, and that’s encouraging. Hopefully, we’ll see him in action before the season ends,” said the coach.
Sundowns Take No Risks
With Sundowns fighting for titles on multiple fronts, they clearly don’t want to rush Mothiba back into the intensity of top-flight football. For now, it’s all about making sure the 29-year-old regains full confidence and sharpness—so when he does return, he can make a real impact.
