Springbok captain Siya Kolisi made a surprise appearance at the Junior Springboks’ training session in Gqeberha, delivering a heartfelt message to South Africa’s next generation of rugby stars.
Fresh off their impressive win over Argentina in the opening round of the Under-20 Rugby Championship, the Junior Boks were back on the training field at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium when Kolisi stopped by to offer support and encouragement.
Kolisi, a proud son of the Eastern Cape, was back in his hometown and couldn’t resist the chance to connect with the young talents shaping the future of South African rugby.
“Future Looks Bright”
“It’s so good to be back in Gqeberha,” Kolisi said. “The passion for rugby here is unmatched, and it’s clear to see that these young players are working incredibly hard. From what I saw today, our rugby future is in safe hands.”
Joking about the physical stature of the young Boks, he added, “Some of these guys are massive! They make me look small.”
Kolisi shared a powerful message with the squad, reminding them of the privilege of wearing the green and gold at such a young age.
“I told them this moment is a gift,” he said. “They’re representing all of us—every South African. And they must make the most of it. Don’t just dream about this level; aim for something even bigger.”
Message to Eastern Cape Fans
With nearly 9,000 fans turning out for the Junior Boks’ opening match, Kolisi also praised the loyal rugby supporters in Gqeberha, urging them to keep backing the tournament.
“This province lives and breathes rugby,” he said. “Every time we play here, it’s special. I just want to thank the people of Gqeberha for always showing up. You’re proving that this city is ready to host major events.”
A Moment to Remember
Junior Springbok captain Riley Norton said Kolisi’s visit was a massive morale boost for the entire squad.
“To have Siya watching our session and speaking with us afterward was unforgettable,” Norton said. “He’s our role model. We’re grateful for his time and his words—they meant a lot to all of us.”
Tickets for the tournament are just R20 and can be purchased via Webtickets or at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium ticket office.
Round two kicks off on Tuesday, 6 May, with New Zealand facing Argentina at 14:00, followed by South Africa vs. Australia at 16:10.
