Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Matlou is edging closer to the exit door, with his current contract set to expire in June. It seems increasingly likely that the 26-year-old will leave, as Chiefs are reportedly not looking to extend his deal.

Injuries have hindered Matlou’s involvement this season, and he has only featured in eight league matches since his return in January. As a result, his future at the club looks uncertain, and AmaZulu have emerged as potential suitors.

Sources close to the situation have confirmed that AmaZulu are keen on the former Swallows FC player, with initial inquiries believed to have been made. “I can tell you that AmaZulu have shown interest in George,” a report stated. “It’s still early, but they’ve asked about him.”

A second source reiterated that Matlou’s situation at Chiefs remains unclear, with no contract renewal discussions taking place. “By now, George should know whether he’s staying or leaving, and his future at Chiefs is up in the air,” they added, hinting that AmaZulu could capitalize on his impending free agency.

With Chiefs reportedly eyeing midfield reinforcements like Azam FC’s Feisal Salum, it’s possible Matlou could be one of the players let go to make room for new signings. For now, Matlou’s agent, John Wilson, remains focused on the remaining weeks of the season.

“There are no talks at the moment about a contract renewal,” Wilson confirmed. “By now, George should have clarity on his future. As of now, nothing is settled.”
