Siya Kolisi has undoubtedly enjoyed a remarkable career with the Springboks, steering the team to back-to-back World Cup triumphs. The 33-year-old captain has earned 92 caps since making his debut in June 2013 under then-coach Heyneke Meyer, and has had significant stints with Western Province, Stormers, and the Sharks.
However, despite his legendary status in South African rugby, Kolisiβs future with the Springboks is clouded with uncertainty. As the competition for starting positions intensifies, head coach Rassie Erasmus has evaluated over 80 players in preparation for the 2025 Rugby World Cup.
Kolisi Speaks Out on His Future
After the Sharks’ thrilling comeback win over Ulster last weekend, Kolisi acknowledged the fierce competition for a spot in the national team. He shared, βItβs big for our country, itβs big for us as a group, and a lot of us are fighting to make the national team.β
This is not the first time Kolisi has hinted at the possibility that his time with the Springboks may be limited. Earlier in the season, he revealed, βTo be honest, Iβm not thinking about the captaincy. I just want to make the team.”
He went on to emphasize his focus on playing well, adding, βThe most important thing for me is to have the chance to play for the Springboks. Whether Iβm captain or not is not in my control. I just want to play well enough to be part of the team and, hopefully, make it to the 2027 World Cup.β
