Kaizer Chiefs may be heading to the Nedbank Cup final, but their league form tells a different story — one that’s left fans and analysts questioning their consistency. For forward Ashley Du Preez, the root of the problem is simple: the team’s mindset.

“It really comes down to mentality,” Du Preez told FARPost. “In the league, we don’t always have the same intensity and focus that we bring to cup games.”

The 27-year-old attacker, who joined Chiefs from Stellenbosch, believes the squad needs to find a better balance between their approach to cup matches and league fixtures if they want to succeed across the board.

“We need to go into every match with the same attitude — whether it’s a cup game or a league match. If we did that, our results in the PSL would improve.”

Du Preez admitted that the squad is putting in strong performances during cup matches because they’re hungry to end the club’s trophy drought, but warns that they can’t afford to ignore the league campaign.

“We’ve done well in the cup this season, and obviously we want to bring silverware back to the club. But our focus shouldn’t only be on that — we need to perform in the league too.”

Kaizer Chiefs will face their old rivals Orlando Pirates in a massive Nedbank Cup final showdown on Saturday, 10 May, at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
