Former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns winger Lebohang “Cheeseboy” Mokoena isn’t so sure that Pitso Mosimane would be the perfect fit for the Buccaneers. With Jose Riveiro set to step down at the end of the season, all eyes are on who will take over, and Mosimane’s name has been heavily linked with the hot seat.
Pitso has been available since parting ways with Iranian side Abha FC, and he’s made it clear he’s open to new challenges. But Mokoena, who played under the legendary coach at Sundowns, thinks this move could come with some serious complications.
“Pitso is a top coach, no doubt,” said Cheeseboy on the Soccer Beat podcast. “But I think it’ll be tough at Pirates. He’s someone who likes to have full control — from tactics to the people around him.”
According to Mokoena, Mosimane’s coaching style and the structure at Orlando Pirates might not blend well. The coach is known for working closely with his own technical team and having a big say in club decisions, something that might clash with how things are done at Mayfair.
Will Pitso’s Style Work at Pirates?
Mokoena also raised questions about whether the fans would embrace Mosimane’s philosophy — a style quite different from what Pirates currently play. And that’s not all. Pitso might want to make changes to the squad — including possibly letting go of fan-favorite players — which could backfire with the Sea Robbers’ passionate supporters.
“If he comes in and decides some players don’t fit his system, it could get messy. Imagine him letting go of a fan favourite… It could spark real issues between him and the supporters.”
While Mokoena acknowledges Pitso has the ability to lead a big club like Pirates, he’s warning that success won’t come overnight — and patience might be in short supply.
