Kaizer Chiefs appear to be circling Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Sphelele Mkhulise as his future in Tshwane hangs in the balance.
The 29-year-old Bafana Bafana international’s contract is set to expire in June, though Sundowns do hold an option to extend it by another year. However, things are not so straightforward.
According to Mgosi Squad, Mkhulise has been offered a new deal by Sundowns — but it hasn’t hit the mark. He’s reportedly pushed back with a counter-proposal, and the club is still reviewing it.
Chiefs eyeing a potential opening
Amid this contract stalemate, Kaizer Chiefs are said to be keeping close tabs on the situation. A source revealed that while Sundowns are reluctant to lose Mkhulise to a direct rival, they also understand the risks of retaining a player who’s not entirely content — especially with concerns over his limited playing time.
The midfielder is believed to be seeking assurances on more regular minutes, something that may depend on incoming coach Miguel Cardoso’s plans.
“Mkhulise wants a clearer picture of where he fits in. If that clarity doesn’t come, a move away — possibly to Chiefs — could be on the cards,” the source said.
This isn’t the first time Chiefs have looked toward Chloorkop for midfield reinforcements. They were recently linked with Sipho Mbule and have previously snapped up stars like Khama Billiat and Leonardo Castro from Sundowns.
