SuperSport United might lose defender Ime Okon for free at the end of the season due to a twist in contract negotiations.

Despite previous reports suggesting that Okon had agreed to a three-year deal with the club, confirmed by SuperSport United CEO Stanley Matthews, new developments indicate that the agreement is far from finalized. According to SABC Sport, Okon could become a free agent from July if both parties fail to reach an agreement.

Okon’s agent, Glyn Binkin, confirmed that European clubs are interested in the young defender, and while Okon previously attracted interest from Ukrainian giants Dynamo Kyiv and even went for a trial, he chose not to move to Kyiv due to the ongoing political tensions between Ukraine and Russia.

Binkin added that Okon’s priority at the moment is helping SuperSport United avoid relegation from the Betway Premiership. The defender is currently focusing on the club’s survival efforts rather than contract discussions.

“He has not signed a new contract yet,” Binkin said. “The club has indicated their desire to offer him a new deal, but as things stand, he will be free from 30 June 2025. We’re considering all options.”

As SuperSport United looks to secure Okon’s future, the interest from European clubs could play a significant role in the negotiations. However, Okon’s focus remains on keeping his current club in the Premier Soccer League.
