Kaizer Chiefs legend Patrick Mabedi has urged the club to retain coach Nasreddine Nabi for next season.

While Nabi has faced challenges this season, with just eight league wins to his name, Mabedi believes the Tunisian coach has made progress with the team. Chiefs still have the chance to end the season on a high note if Nabi leads them to victory in the Nedbank Cup final next month against archrivals Orlando Pirates at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Mabedi acknowledged that while the results haven’t been ideal, the team has shown improvement under Nabi’s guidance.

“Yes, the results haven’t been great, and we know that teams are judged by results. But from my perspective, the team has improved under coach Nabi. They are creating more chances, even though they haven’t been able to convert them,” he told SNL24.

The Chiefs legend feels that dismissing Nabi now would mean starting from scratch, which would be counterproductive. He believes that Nabi has done his part, and now it’s up to the players to deliver on the field.

“If the coach is fired now, everything would need to start over again, and that would be a setback. That’s why I believe Chiefs should keep Nabi. There’s no need to let him go,” Mabedi stated.

He added, “As a coach, Nabi can only do so much. The players need to step up and do their part on the field. The coach has done his work in training and in the dressing room, but on the pitch, it’s the players’ responsibility. I think they haven’t been perfect so far, and they need to work on that while keeping the coach.”

With Kaizer Chiefs having gone without silverware for a decade, Nabi has the chance to end the drought with a Nedbank Cup victory.
