Kaizer Chiefs will be without one of their rising stars, Mfundo ‘Obrigado’ Vilakazi, for both upcoming clashes against arch-rivals Orlando Pirates. The young winger, who has become a regular name in the Amakhosi squad, has been called up to represent the South African U20 national team. Unfortunately for Chiefs, his national duty comes right as they prepare for back-to-back Soweto Derby showdowns. The U20 AFCON runs from 26 April to 18 May, meaning Vilakazi will be unavailable during this crucial period.

Derby Showdowns Could Define Chiefs’ Season

Chiefs and Pirates are set to face off twice in a short space of time, and both matches carry massive weight. First up is the Betway Premiership clash on Saturday, 3 May at 15:00. Just a week later, the two giants lock horns again in the Nedbank Cup final on Saturday, 10 May. With a lot on the line, these derbies could make or break Amakhosi’s season.

Fiston Mayele Ready for Big Champions League Test

While all eyes are on the Soweto Derby, Orlando Pirates have another huge test ahead. They host Egyptian giants Pyramids FC in the first leg of the CAF Champions League semi-final on Saturday, 19 April at Orlando Stadium (18:00 kick-off). The return leg is scheduled for Friday, 25 April in Egypt. Leading the charge for Pyramids is Fiston Mayele – a player rumoured to be on Kaizer Chiefs’ radar. The Congolese striker has been on fire, scoring 19 goals in just 33 matches in Africa’s top club competition.
