Mamelodi Sundowns’ 2-1 defeat to Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup semi-finals has sparked much debate among fans and analysts.

Tactical Decisions Under the Microscope
Head coach Miguel Cardoso’s post-match frustration was clear, especially over the absence of VAR in the PSL, which he claimed contributed to the outcome.

However, beyond the VAR issue, the match’s tactical choices have come under scrutiny. The timing of substitutions, notably the early removal of attacking players like Iqraam Rayners and Bathusi Aubaas, surprised many. Their replacements, Arthur Sales and Jayden Adams, failed to make an impact, which left fans feeling disappointed.

On social media, several fans shared their thoughts under the hashtag #NedbankCup:

  • @Thabo_M19: “I blame Miguel Cardoso. We were doomed for loss because of him, how can you sub Bathusi?”
  • @LeratoK_Sport: “They shouldn’t have put Lucas in today because he really cost us.”
  • @Kamo_PitchTalk: “Arthur and Jayden Adams were just not focused today, really disappointing.”
  • @Zee_Mdlongwa: “I’m shocked because these players play really well and then all of a sudden this is what happens. I did not expect this.”
  • @Bongz_TrueFan: “This was a wake-up call. Sundowns need to fix things fast before the next CAF clash.”

Defensive Errors and Missed Opportunities
Defensively, Lucas Suarez’s mistake allowed Kaizer Chiefs to equalize, and Wandile Duba admitted that they had targeted him. According to Duba, Coach Nasreddine Nabi had instructed the team to apply pressure on the left centre-back, which ultimately led to the mistake.

Fans also noted that Sundowns lacked the usual focus and intensity that typically define their performances. Their inability to control the midfield and apply consistent pressure on Chiefs left them vulnerable, especially in the second half.

Looking Ahead
With the Nedbank Cup now out of reach, Sundowns’ focus shifts to their crucial CAF Champions League semi-final against Egyptian giants Al Ahly. The first leg will take place on Saturday, 19 April.
