Kaizer Chiefs are now just two matches away from securing their first major trophy in a decade after a hard-fought victory in the Nedbank Cup quarterfinals.

Nedbank Cup Quarterfinal: Stellenbosch 1-3 Kaizer Chiefs

The match saw Miguel Inacio put Stellenbosch ahead from the penalty spot, but Chiefs kept their composure. A late equalizer from substitute Andre De Jong brought Stellenbosch back into the game, but Chiefs had the final say. Pule Mmodi’s controversial goal in injury time swung the momentum, and Mfundo Vilakazi sealed the win in the 11th minute of stoppage time.

Reflecting on the game, coach Nasreddine Nabi acknowledged the challenge but praised his team’s resilience. “It was tough to concede, but we knew we were up against a strong opponent. Even after the setback, we kept believing in our ability to come back. That’s why we introduced Shabalala and Vilakazi, anticipating extra time and needing extra energy,” Nabi told iDiski Times.

Ngcobo Adapting to a New Role Under Coach Nabi

Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi has sparked excitement among fans with his tactical adjustments, particularly regarding Nkosingiphile Ngcobo’s position on the field.

Ngcobo, who has struggled to make the No. 10 role his own, is now being tested in a deeper midfield role—either as a No. 6 or No. 8. Coach Nabi explained that this switch was necessary to improve Chiefs’ ability to link up play, especially against teams that defend deep.

“Yes, we played Ngcobo in an unfamiliar role because we needed more technical quality in midfield to connect with the attack,” Nabi told FARPost. “Sometimes, taking risks is necessary to get the results you want. We were a bit too attacking, but it was a calculated risk.”

Nabi further emphasized the need for Ngcobo to become more physically competitive in his new role. “He’s a very technical and intelligent player, but playing in central midfield requires more physicality since space is limited, and opponents close in quickly. We want him to develop that aspect of his game.”

With these adjustments, Chiefs are aiming for a strong finish in the competition, with fans hopeful that the long-awaited silverware is finally within reach.
