Orlando Pirates are eyeing a defensive overhaul for the upcoming season to strengthen their vulnerable backline.
After leading the Betway Premiership for seven rounds, the Buccaneers have struggled to maintain consistency in the second half of the season. Despite suffering injuries to key defenders, they didnβt make any signings during the January transfer window.
According to Soccer Laduma, Orlando Pirates are targeting Stellenboschβs standout defender Thabo Moloisane. The club is looking to bolster their central defense and is preparing to make an offer for Moloisane, who has impressed with his growth at Stellenbosch.
βA central defender like Moloisane is a top priority for Pirates,β an insider shared. βThey want to build a strong backline for next season, particularly as they aim to compete in multiple competitions, including the CAF Champions League. His experience in African football is something they see as a big advantage.β
In addition to strengthening the center of defense, Pirates are also focusing on improving their full-back positions, with both right-back and left-back upgrades being considered. They may look to bring in Stellenbosch’s Fawaaz Basadien, with potential player swaps on the cards. Relebohile Mofokeng is expected to leave at the end of the season, which could see Oswin Appollis join the team as a replacement.
The club has also been missing the services of Thabiso Sesane, who has been out with injury. While experienced defender Thapelo Xoki returned to action, Pirates faced setbacks in March, with Xoki struggling to find his rhythm.
Orlando Pirates will next face SuperSport United in the Nedbank Cup this weekend as they continue their season.
