Mamelodi Sundowns star Rivaldo Coetzee has delivered a harsh reality check to Orlando Pirates fans, suggesting that their team’s hopes of catching up to the league leaders are slim.
In a recent interview with The Citizen, Coetzee shared his thoughts on the challenge of closing the gap on top teams: “This is where you win the league, when games are back-to-back, and teams are trying to catch up,” Coetzee explained. “Mentally, you start thinking about the gap. You may have games in hand, but games in hand don’t count as points. The gap remains the same, even if you’ve played four or five fewer games than the team at the top.”
He continued, emphasizing the difficulty of playing catch-up: “To close the gap, you’re hoping for other teams to lose, and you have to win all your matches. But you’re not going to win every single one, and there will be stumbles. It’s tough, and you can see it on the players’ faces when they start to lose hope. It’s hard when you’re trying to catch up.”
