With Jose Riveiro’s departure on the horizon, Pitso Mosimane is emerging as a strong candidate to replace him at Orlando Pirates.
Riveiro, who took charge in 2022, has enjoyed a successful tenure, guiding the team to five trophies, including three MTN8 titles and two Nedbank Cups. His achievements have cemented his place as one of the best coaches in the PSL era for Pirates.
However, Riveiroβs contract is set to expire at the end of this season, and reports suggest he has no intention of renewing it, citing his longing for family in Spain. Despite this, Orlando Pirates management is likely to make one last push to persuade him to stay for another year, especially given the teamβs progress under his leadership.
Although Pirates’ chances of winning the league this season have diminished after four losses in their last nine matches, the team still has the Nedbank Cup to defend and remains in the CAF Champions League.
Should Riveiro leave, former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane could be the ideal replacement. Mosimane, who won five league titles with Sundowns before his move to Al Ahly, brings extensive experience and could be the key to ending Pirates’ league title drought. However, the challenge for the club will be to meet the financial demands required to secure Mosimaneβs services.
