Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates have both faced disciplinary action from the PSL Disciplinary Committee (PSL DC), with both clubs found guilty of fan misbehavior during two separate incidents.
The first incident occurred on 1 February, when a portion of Kaizer Chiefs fans threw objects onto the pitch in protest of a late penalty awarded to Orlando Pirates. The penalty was given after Chiefs’ defender Njabulo Blom was judged to have fouled Relebohile Mofokeng in the box. Patrick Maswanganyi successfully converted the penalty, giving Pirates a 1-0 victory.
A week later, on 8 February, Orlando Pirates faced Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld, suffering a heavy 4-1 defeat. During this match, some Pirates supporters again threw missiles onto the field in frustration, prompting another charge from the PSL DC.
Both clubs pleaded guilty to the charges laid against them. According to PSL Prosecutor Zola Majavu, the fines and penalties have been set as follows:
Kaizer Chiefs were fined R100,000 for the incident against Pirates, with R50,000 of the fine suspended for 12 months, as long as no similar incidents occur. However, Chiefs also had a previous suspended fine of R100,000 from October 2024, which was triggered by the latest offense. As a result, the club now owes a total of R150,000 for both offenses and will share the costs of the disciplinary hearing with Orlando Pirates.
Orlando Pirates also received a fine of R100,000 for the missile-throwing incident at the Sundowns game. Like Chiefs, R50,000 of this fine was suspended. However, since the club had an existing suspended fine of R50,000 from a previous incident, they must now pay R75,000 immediately, in addition to the suspended fine of R50,000.
Both teams now face the consequences of their supporters’ actions, with hefty fines serving as a reminder of the need for better control over fan behavior.
