Kaizer Chiefs Suffer Heavy 4-1 Defeat to SuperSport United in Rain-Soaked Clash
Kaizer Chiefs endured a difficult night at FNB Stadium on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, as they fell to a crushing 4-1 loss against SuperSport United in the Betway Premiership. Despite an early equalizer from Glody Lilepo, former Chiefs players Samir Nurkovic and Christian Saile struck early, with SuperSportβs dominance only growing in the second half. The match, played in challenging weather conditions, saw Chiefs lose their grip on the game, ending with them being reduced to 10 men after Gaston Sirino’s red card.
The match began poorly for Chiefs, who were caught off guard just two minutes into the game. Bradley Cross failed to track Lunguβs run, allowing the SuperSport winger to deliver a perfect cross to Nurkovic, who scored easily. Chiefs were nearly 2-0 down in the 17th minute, but Rushwin Dortly made an incredible clearance off the line to deny Lungu.
After weathering early pressure, Amakhosi slowly got into the game. On 25 minutes, a slick interchange between Lilepo and Frosler created a chance for Yusuf Maart, but his shot went just wide. Chiefs managed to level the score shortly after, with Sirino setting up Frosler for a cross to Mmodi, who played the ball back for Lilepo to score a towering header. However, Chiefs’ joy was short-lived as SuperSport regained the lead just two minutes later, with Saile finishing off a near-identical move from the first goal.
Despite a few attempts to find an equalizer after halftime, including a close effort from Taashriq Morris, Chiefs’ defense continued to struggle. In the 63rd minute, Bvuma misjudged a cross and palmed the ball to Lungu, who scored from close range to make it 3-1. Chiefs’ frustration boiled over when Sirino was sent off in the 68th minute for violent conduct.
SuperSport sealed their victory with a fourth goal in the 83rd minute, as Siphesihle Ndlovu curled a shot into the top corner to complete an embarrassing night for Nasreddine Nabi’s side. With the loss, Chiefs dropped to sixth in the standings, and Nabi will now have to regroup ahead of their next match against Mamelodi Sundowns on March 1, 2025.
For SuperSport, the win left them in 12th place, as they continue to push for improvement in the league standings.
