Under coach Rassie Erasmus, the Springboks have gained recognition for their innovative strategies, especially the controversial 6-2 or 7-2 forwards-to-backs split on the bench, widely known as the “bomb squad.”

While the tactic has been highly effective for the team, it has faced criticism, particularly from former Scotland coach Matt Williams. Williams, who has voiced his concerns about the tactic, has expressed dissatisfaction with World Rugby for allowing the configuration. Although he acknowledges that the tactic is legal, he argues that it discriminates against backs and could pose a safety risk.

Despite the criticism, the use of a forwards-heavy bench has gained popularity across various teams, and now France is reportedly preparing to follow suit by using a 7-1 split for their upcoming Six Nations match against Italy. Although France has previously employed the 6-2 tactic, coach Fabien Galthie is set to push the boundaries further by adopting the 7-1 setup for this weekend’s clash.

In response to the ongoing debate, Erasmus has remained unfazed, consistently defending the “bomb squad” approach. He explained that while he is aware of the criticism and stays connected to South African fans, he believes in playing to their strengths. He further stated that the tactic adheres to the regulations and noted that any concerns about its safety were largely exaggerated.

As the Six Nations progresses, France is preparing for their match against Italy on Sunday, February 23, with the match kicking off at 17:00.
