Kaizer Chiefs are set to bolster their midfield with the impending return of Edson Castillo from injury.
After a lengthy absence since October, when he suffered a fractured fibula against SuperSport United, the Venezuelan playmaker is now back in training and expected to be available for selection by late February. Initially, Castillo was anticipated to be sidelined for four to five months, but his early recovery means Chiefs will soon benefit from his presence in the second half of the season.
Castilloβs return is a welcome boost, particularly as the team has felt his absence in the midfield, where his calmness, creativity, and experience were sorely missed. His comeback will offer coach Cavin Johnson more options, adding depth to a midfield already containing Yusuf Maart, Njabulo Blom, Samkelo Zwane, Sibongiseni Mthethwa, and Lehlogonolo Matlou. Known for his versatility, Castillo can play as a deep-lying midfielder or in a more advanced role, providing tactical flexibility.

As Castillo nears full fitness, there is speculation surrounding his contract. Currently in the second year of his two-year deal, which includes an option for an extension, Chiefs must decide whether to activate the clause. For now, however, the focus remains on Castilloβs recovery, ensuring he returns in optimal condition to strengthen the team.
Meanwhile, Chiefs are also keeping an eye on Royal AM’s goalkeeper, Xolani Ngcobo, amid ongoing instability at the club. With several players reconsidering their futures due to Royal AMβs off-field troubles, Ngcobo has become a prime target for Amakhosi. Although Chiefs may not view him as a first-choice keeper, the clubβs interest is serious, and they are monitoring the situation closely, waiting to see how it unfolds. If Ngcobo’s future at Royal AM becomes uncertain, Chiefs could make their move.
