Kaizer Chiefs Have Struggled to Compete for Titles Since 2020

Back in 2023, @TheeUltimateLee on X raised concerns about the leadership at Kaizer Chiefs, suggesting that Bobby Motaung, Kaizer Motaung Jr., Jessica Motaung, and others in the family aren’t suited for the roles they hold at the club. While it’s a bold statement, it raises valid points. Has Kaizer Motaung Jr. met the expectations set for him as sporting director? Unfortunately, it’s hard to say, with fans questioning whether he’s truly achieved the goals put before him. One fan even compared it to “building his legacy on a wetland.”

Two years on, these fan sentiments still persist.

A Long Trophy Drought for Chiefs, Despite the Club’s Popularity

The Kaizer Chiefs faithful are all too familiar with the club’s lack of success, with their last silverware being the 2014-15 Betway Premiership title. What’s the strategy to end this drought? Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a clear plan. Meanwhile, family members of Dr. Kaizer Motaung continue to hold key positions within the club, which remains one of Africa’s most marketable and profitable football entities, but with little to show in terms of trophies.

Currently, the gap between Chiefs and Sundowns is glaring. With just 13 games left in the 2024-2025 season, Chiefs are 17 points off the title pace, with Sundowns holding a game in hand. Realistically, Chiefs’ focus will be on securing a top-eight finish and qualifying for next season’s MTN8. The dominance of Sundowns, who’ve clinched the league title for seven consecutive seasons, highlights the disparity in South African football. While Orlando Pirates have shown promise this season, their 4-1 loss to Sundowns has dashed any hopes of challenging for the title.
