Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly on the verge of bringing Itumeleng Khune back to Naturena six months after parting ways with the legendary goalkeeper.
Khune, who had an illustrious 25-year career with the club, earned widespread respect from AmaKhosi fans, collecting three league titles, nine domestic cups, and numerous individual honors, including the 2012/13 PSL Player of the Year and three PSL Goalkeeper of the Season awards.
At 37 years old, Khune had envisioned playing for Chiefs into his forties, but after a disappointing 2023/24 season, the club decided not to extend his contract. His final match, against Polokwane City, marked his 25th anniversary with the team, and although Khune was hopeful of returning, Chiefs had other plans.
Despite Khune’s departure, which saw him leave behind 153 clean sheets from 347 appearances, the goalkeeperβs influence at the club remained significant, and the position has yet to be solidified under Nasreddine Nabi.

Reports suggest that Khune might make a comeback, but not in his old role as a goalkeeper. Chiefs are reportedly keen to bring the former Bafana star into a behind-the-scenes role.
βYes, the club still wants to work with Itu,β a source confirmed. βThey believe he has a lot to offer off the pitch, which is why talks have never really stopped.β
The club is exploring the possibility of a role in the marketing and commercial department, as well as future coaching opportunities.
Another source shared, βFor now, it could be in marketing and commercial, but Chiefs also want him to pursue his coaching badges and share his vast experience with young goalkeepers. The club values his knowledge and believes he can have a huge impact on the next generation of shot-stoppers.β
No matter where Khune lands within the organization, itβs clear Chiefs are eager to bring him back in a capacity that allows him to continue contributing to the team he helped build.
