Orlando Pirates are reportedly targeting a former Kaizer Chiefs player to strengthen their defense for next season.
Despite being heavily linked with several players throughout the January transfer window, Pirates made no signings.
Pirates Missed Out on January Deals
It was widely anticipated that Pirates would seal deals for Polokwane City duo Oswin Appollis and Thabang Matuludi in January, but ultimately, no move materialized. The club is also said to be keeping an eye on Stellenbosch FC left-back Fawaaz Basadien, with the Bafana Bafana international expected to make a move in the off-season. However, should they fail to secure Basadien, Pirates have a backup plan in mind.
Coincidentally, that backup option is another player from Stellenbosch. According to Soccer-Laduma, Pirates are also interested in former Kaizer Chiefs DDC captain Omega Mdaka as an alternative to Basadien for the left-back position.
A source close to the club revealed, “They’re looking at the young defender, Omega Mdaka, who came from Chiefs. They’re struggling to get Fawaaz (Basadien), so they see Mdaka as a good option. He’s young and has a lot of potential. Pirates are keeping a close watch on him before making any move.”
A second source confirmed that the club’s pursuit of Mdaka aligns with their goal of strengthening their left-back options for next season.
Pirates’ Left-Back Search
“This could be a solid move for the club, given that their primary focus right now is the left-back position. They have Innocent Maela, but he’s not seeing much game time, and Paseka Mako, who just returned from injury. As a result, Deon Hotto has often been filling in at left-back. Pirates are now looking for another left-back, and Mdaka has emerged as one of their top targets, according to scouts and recruiters. Let’s see what happens,” said the source.
