Lucas Ribeiro Costa has been a standout player since joining Mamelodi Sundowns in 2023. The Brazilian midfielder has been in exceptional form, scoring 21 goals in 31 league appearances for Masandawana. This season alone, he has netted nine goals, helping Sundowns maintain their lead at the top of the Betway Premiership. Ribeiro’s performance this past weekend against Orlando Pirates further cemented his status as one of the best players in the PSL right now.
Is Lucas Ribeiro Eligible to Play for Bafana Bafana?
Unfortunately, Ribeiro is not yet eligible to play for Bafana Bafana as he doesn’t meet the residency requirements for South African citizenship. Having been in the country for less than two years, the 26-year-old would need at least five years of residency to qualify for the national team.
Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has expressed his admiration for the Brazilian and has stated that he would love to have him on the team. Ribeiro himself has also shown interest in representing South Africa, saying he would be thrilled if given the opportunity.
“I haven’t received an invitation to play for the national team yet. I don’t think I qualify yet, but when I do and get a call-up, it would be great and a pleasure. Bafana are doing well and competing against the best, and playing for a national team is the ultimate achievement for many players,” Ribeiro said last year.
By the time Ribeiro becomes eligible for Bafana Bafana, he will be nearing 30. If Broos is serious about bringing the Sundowns star into the squad, both the South African Football Association (Safa) and the government may need to expedite his citizenship process.
“There are many Sundowns players in the Bafana squad, so it would be easier for me to adapt. I believe I could contribute if called up, and my response would be more positive than negative,” Ribeiro added.
