Orlando Pirates’ Betway Premiership title hopes took a serious hit after their 4-1 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.
This marked the Buccaneers’ third league loss of the season, with two of those defeats coming on the road. The result saw Masandawana secure an important three points, extending the gap between the two teams to a daunting nine points. However, Orlando Pirates still have a game in hand, giving them a chance to close the gap.
Pirates will now shift their focus to their next league match, where they will look to recover against Golden Arrows on Wednesday, February 19, at 19:30. Before that, they will face Baroka FC in the Nedbank Cup Round of 16 on Saturday, February 15, at 15:00.
Other notable results from the weekend’s Betway Premiership action included Kaizer Chiefs’ narrow 1-0 victory over Stellenbosch FC on Friday, while AmaZulu secured a comfortable 2-0 win over Marumo Gallants. On Saturday, Magesi FC caused an upset, beating Cape Town City FC 2-0. Meanwhile, Richards Bay defeated Polokwane City 2-0, and TS Galaxy triumphed 1-0 over Chippa United. On Sunday, Sekhukhune United and SuperSport United played to a 1-1 draw.
In a reminder, Royal AM’s match against Golden Arrows was cancelled due to their suspension.
