Monnapule Saleng’s future at Orlando Pirates is uncertain, and if the club decides to sell him, several players could directly benefit from his departure.
Mohau Nkota
At just 20 years old, Nkota has already surpassed Saleng in the current lineup, especially on the right side of Pirates’ attack. If Saleng were to leave, Nkota’s position would be solidified, giving him the chance to grow even further. The young winger has impressed in his breakout season, though there’s still room for him to develop.
Kabelo Dlamini
A fan favorite, Kabelo Dlamini, has often come off the bench as a super-sub. The 28-year-old can shine as a playmaker and narrow winger, offering Pirates more control in possession. If Saleng were sold, Dlamini could be given more opportunities to start and make an even greater impact on the pitch.
Deon Hotto
Veteran Deon Hotto, versatile as ever, is a ‘Swiss Army Knife’ type of player who can thrive in various roles. While Hotto is expected to leave at the end of the current season, a sale of Saleng could change the club’s plans. Hotto has been trusted in a right-sided attacking midfield role recently, showing his importance by scoring and assisting in Pirates’ recent 2-1 win against Sekhukhune. Should Saleng be sold, Hotto might be offered a contract extension to provide backup to Nkota.
Should Orlando Pirates Sell Saleng Now?
Earlier, Pirates had the chance to sell Saleng to European clubs for around €2 million (just under R40 million), but they opted to keep him. In hindsight, that decision could now be seen as a mistake. Saleng has not featured in a competitive match this year, with his last appearance coming in December 2024 during a 0-0 draw with Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League group stage. His stellar 2022-2023 season, where he scored 15 goals and registered 11 assists, earned him PSL Player of the Year honors. However, his form has been inconsistent since then, and his future at the club now hangs in the balance.
