Former Orlando Pirates coach Josef Zinnbauer has offered his perspective on the upcoming CAF Champions League clash between his former side and Egyptian giants Al Ahly, explaining why he believes the Egyptian club are more likely to come out on top. Zinnbauer, who had a stint at Pirates between 2019 and 2021, shared his insights ahead of the highly anticipated encounter, citing Al Ahly’s strength and pedigree in continental football.

Zinnbauer, who now manages an unnamed club after his departure from Pirates, was asked to weigh in on the upcoming clash between the two clubs, and his comments have sparked widespread attention. Al Ahly, one of the most successful clubs in African football, are seen as favorites going into the match due to their impressive track record in continental competitions. The Red Devils, as Al Ahly are known, have dominated African football for years and are widely regarded as one of the powerhouses of the CAF Champions League, with numerous titles under their belt.

In contrast, Orlando Pirates, despite their rich history and success in South African football, have struggled to consistently make an impact on the continental stage in recent years. The Buccaneers, while a competitive side domestically, have faced stiff competition from the likes of Al Ahly and other top clubs in Africa when it comes to continental glory.

Zinnbauer, who enjoyed success during his time at Pirates, acknowledged the talent in the current Pirates squad but pointed out that Al Ahly’s experience, depth, and ability to perform in high-pressure situations give them a significant advantage. He emphasized the quality of Al Ahly’s squad, which boasts several star players with vast experience in continental football.

β€œI think Al Ahly are the stronger team going into this match,” Zinnbauer said. β€œThey have so much experience in the CAF Champions League and have proven themselves time and time again. It’s difficult to bet against them, especially when you look at the depth of their squad and the level of players they have.”

Zinnbauer also highlighted the importance of Al Ahly’s tactical approach, which has been honed by years of success in African club competitions. Under coach Pitso Mosimane, Al Ahly have been able to blend solid defensive discipline with attacking flair, making them a formidable side. The Egyptian club’s ability to control games, manage pressure, and execute in key moments is something that Zinnbauer believes gives them the edge.

β€œAl Ahly is a team that knows how to handle big games. They have quality players in every position, and their tactical understanding is excellent. You can see their confidence in the way they approach these matches, and that will be a key factor in their favor,” Zinnbauer explained.

While acknowledging that Pirates have quality players and the potential to cause an upset, Zinnbauer pointed out that the Buccaneers have often struggled to match Al Ahly’s level of consistency in continental tournaments. Pirates’ recent campaigns in the CAF Champions League have shown glimpses of promise, but they have not always been able to go the distance against top-tier African sides.

Zinnbauer also noted that the current Pirates team is still in a period of transition, with a new coach, Nasreddine Nabi, in charge and several new faces brought into the squad. He believes that while the team has potential, they may lack the same level of cohesion and experience as Al Ahly, which could prove to be a decisive factor in the match.

β€œOrlando Pirates have a good squad, no doubt, but they are in a transition phase, and that can make a big difference in these kinds of matches,” Zinnbauer stated. β€œThe more experienced teams like Al Ahly have an edge because they know how to handle the pressure, and they know how to win in these situations. Pirates have the potential, but it will be a tough challenge.”

Despite his belief that Al Ahly are the favorites, Zinnbauer expressed his hope that Pirates can rise to the occasion and put up a strong fight. He praised the club’s supporters for their unwavering loyalty and encouraged the players to show belief in themselves and their ability to compete at the highest level.

β€œThere is always hope in football, and anything can happen,” Zinnbauer said. β€œPirates have a proud history, and they have the quality to compete with the best. I hope they give a good performance and make their supporters proud.”

As the two clubs prepare to meet on the continental stage, fans of both teams are eagerly awaiting what promises to be an exciting and intense encounter. While Zinnbauer’s analysis puts Al Ahly in the driver’s seat, football fans know that anything can happen on the day, and both clubs will be looking to make a statement in the CAF Champions League.
