The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) has expressed its approval over the recent arrest of a man filmed torturing a Nile crocodile. The shocking video, which surfaced in January, showed the man kicking and beating the defenseless reptile repeatedly before striking it in the mouth with a slasher. His disturbing actions gained attention after he proudly dubbed himself the ‘King of Crocodile.’

The suspect was apprehended after a joint operation between the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the NSPCA. The arrest took place on Thursday afternoon following weeks of investigation. Jacques Peacock, spokesperson for the NSPCA, emphasized the significance of this action in holding animal abusers accountable, especially those who commit such heinous acts in an attempt to gain social media fame.

After gathering substantial evidence, the authorities located and identified the suspect in Duthuni, a village near Thohoyandou in Limpopo. NSPCA National Inspector White, with the crucial assistance of SAPS and the Louis Trichardt SPCA, successfully tracked down the perpetrator.

The suspect is now facing charges under the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962. He remains in police custody and is expected to appear before the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on Monday, February 17, 2025.

The NSPCA also voiced deep concern over the disturbing trend of animal cruelty being filmed for social media entertainment. The organization has called on South Africans to treat all animals with respect, stressing the importance of protecting them from harm and exploitation.

As the case continues to unfold, it serves as a reminder of the need for greater awareness and accountability when it comes to the treatment of animals, particularly in the age of social media.
