The Makhubele family in Sekgakgapeng Village, Waterberg district, Limpopo, has found both relief and sorrow after the discovery of their missing uncle, Jan Makhubela. Jan, 47, had been missing since Friday, 12 July 2024, after visiting an initiation school in the area. The turning point came when a group of fishermen discovered one of his boots and alerted the police, leading to a search that ultimately uncovered Janβs remains.
According to Janβs niece, Letlhogonolo Makhubela (25), the discovery of the boot was key to finding his body. “The fishermen knew we were looking for him, and the clothes he was wearing helped identify him quickly,” Letlhogonolo explained. The body was discovered not far from where the boot was found, and it was confirmed through DNA testing on 6 February that it was indeed Jan.
Though the family is devastated by their loss, they expressed a sense of relief that they were able to bring Janβs remains home. “Itβs been a long, difficult journey, but now we can lay him to rest properly,” Letlhogonolo shared. The six-month search took an emotional toll on the family, but they were deeply grateful for the support from their community throughout the ordeal.

Jan was remembered fondly by the people of Sekgakgapeng Village, with many describing him as someone who got along with everyone. “He was outspoken and didnβt hold grudges. He enjoyed being around people, and weβre all deeply saddened by his passing,” said villager John Kanyane. Despite the tragic circumstances of his discovery, the Makhubela family takes comfort in knowing they can now give Jan the dignified farewell he deserves.
