The South African soccer community is mourning the loss of another legend, Jackie “Asinamali” Masike, a founding member and former central defender of Kaizer Chiefs. Masike passed away on Thursday night at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.
A close friend of Masike revealed that the soccer legend had been in and out of the hospital for several months, battling health issues. Masike was a key player in Kaizer Chiefs’ dominant era in the 1970s and 1980s, helping the team win numerous trophies, including the league title, Mainstay Cup, BP Top 8, and Champion of Champions in 1981.
Masike’s impressive career with Amakhosi spanned from 1970 to 1982, during which he won several accolades, including the 1980 Sales House Champion of Champions, 1982 Mainstay Cup, 1982 BP Top 8, and 1982 Sales House Champion of Champions.

Off the field, Masike was known for his philanthropic work, often visiting children with cancer at Bara Hospital alongside other soccer legends and philanthropists. He was also honored during Kaizer Chiefs’ 50th-anniversary celebrations, where he was invited to unveil the team’s new black and gold replica jersey.
In a heartfelt letter to Kaizer Chiefs Chairman Kaizer Motaung on his 80th birthday, Masike praised Motaung’s kindness, honesty, and generosity, describing him as a “welcoming person who looks out for his peers and is always happy to help.” Masike’s legacy will be remembered and cherished by the South African soccer community.
