Abongile Tom’s Return: Can He Redeem Himself After MTN8 Controversy?

by Bono Tshivhase

Referee Abongile Tom is set to return to officiating top-flight matches in South Africa after a four-week absence. His hiatus followed a controversial decision during the MTN8 final between Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch FC in October, where he allowed a quick free-kick to be taken several meters from the foul location, leading to a pivotal goal for Pirates.

Despite the criticism, the South African Football Association (SAFA) clarified that Tom was not suspended but was officiating at the COSAFA Women’s Championship during his absence from the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

Tom’s return to PSL duties marks the end of his brief period away from domestic league matches
