KwaZulu-Natalβs Department of Health has assured the public that urgent steps are being taken to restore the water supply at Durbanβs Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital. The 1,200-bed facility, one of the busiest hospitals in the province, was affected by a water outage on Sunday, along with several other areas in Umlazi, south of Durban.
The department has emphasized that it is working closely with neighbouring hospitals to manage patient numbers and ease the strain on the affected facility. Contingency measures have also been put in place to safeguard patient welfare and maintain hygiene standards.
As the primary water provider, eThekwini Municipality is responsible for the hospitalβs supply. In the meantime, hospital management has taken proactive steps to mitigate the crisis. Bottled water is being purchased, and additional supplies are being delivered by various NGOs that have stepped in to assist.
Department spokesperson Ntokozo Maphisa acknowledged the disruption caused by the situation and expressed gratitude to those offering support. He reassured the public that the department remains committed to protecting the health and well-being of patients and staff while authorities work to restore normal water supply.
