A Malawian national behind the wheel of a stolen truck left a trail of destruction across KwaZulu-Natal this afternoon after allegedly clashing with his employer. The dramatic and dangerous rampage ended only after a high-speed chase involving Umlazi K9 police units brought the truck to a crashing halt on Underwood Road in Pinetown.

The Dispute That Lit the Fuse
According to initial reports, the altercation began at a local freight company, where the driver was employed. Witnesses claim that a heated argument broke out over unpaid wages or mistreatment β€” though police have yet to confirm the motive. Moments later, the man jumped into one of the company’s trucks and sped off.

High-Speed Terror Through KZN Streets
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as the truck plowed through several vehicles, rammed into a police cruiser, and struck at least one pedestrian. β€œIt was like a movie β€” cars flying, people screaming. He didn’t stop for anything,” said one motorist caught in the chaos near Umlazi.

Police in Pursuit
The Umlazi K9 unit responded swiftly, pursuing the vehicle across multiple urban roads. Officers attempted to box the truck in while urging the public to stay clear. The pursuit came to a dramatic end in Pinetown, where the truck crashed and was finally immobilized.

Aftermath and Investigation
Emergency services responded immediately, treating injured individuals on the scene. The condition of the pedestrian remains unknown. The driver, who sustained minor injuries, was arrested on multiple charges, including vehicle theft, reckless driving, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and endangering public safety.

Police spokesperson Capt. Thandeka Mkhize confirmed the suspect is in custody and emphasized, β€œThis was a highly dangerous situation that could have ended far worse. We’re relieved no lives were lost.”

Community in Shock
Residents and bystanders are still reeling from the incident, which took place during peak afternoon traffic. Many have taken to social media, sharing videos and voicing concerns over security and road safety.
