Police officers in the North West province sprang into action this week after a suspected cellphone thief attempted to flee following a snatching incident in a busy public area.
According to South African Police Service (SAPS) spokespersons, the suspect allegedly grabbed a cellphone from an unsuspecting victim and took off on foot. Nearby SAPS officers, who happened to be on patrol, witnessed the commotion and immediately gave chase.
The dramatic pursuit unfolded through crowded streets, drawing the attention of stunned onlookers. After a brief but intense foot chase, officers successfully apprehended the suspect, recovering the stolen cellphone.
The suspect, believed to be in his mid-20s, is now in police custody and will face charges of theft and resisting arrest. The recovered device was returned to its rightful owner.
SAPS has since commended the officers for their swift response and urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. “Quick action and community awareness are key to fighting petty crimes,” said a SAPS official.
